After my last post about the incredible work of Naomi Feil (see it here) I realized how many of those in the Begin with Yes family are touched by Alzheimer’s disease. Since June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month I thought I’d help inspire support by sharing a couple of incredible songs inspired by artists whose lives have been touched by Alzheimer’s.
For those who may not know, in addition to being the Author and Chief Optimist at Begin with Yes, I’m also the President and CEO of a nonprofit organization called The Moore Center, which serves people with developmental disabilities as well as the elderly.
We created a compilation of music inspired by the issues around aging to help bring visibility to our programs. It includes are a couple of beautiful songs inspired by Alzheimer’s disease which help convey is devastating effects. Here are two amazing songs, “Unraveling” by Liz Longley and “From His Window” by John Smith, and there’s also a link below where you can see the lyrics and get free downloads.
Unraveling was inspired by Liz’s grandmother, Ave, who lived with Alzheimer’s for over 10 years.
She tours nationally, so if you get the chance to see her perform you certainly won’t regret it.
From His Window was inspired by John’s father’s time in an Alzheimer’s care facility, where he would stand in the window and wave good-bye as John drove away.
John is another example of a wonderful songwriter and human being. You can hear more of his music at his website.
This is a video we made of his beautiful song:
