We all need friends, and sometimes we find them in unlikely places. Finding new friends is easier for some than others, and it usually requires us to step out and try new things. It also requires that we reach out and initiate a conversation, which may also be difficult for some… but it’s worth it!

One trick that I found works well with initiating a conversation is to be curious. Ask people questions and before you realize it the discussion will start to flow. But you can’t ask people questions if there’s no one around, so get yourself out to where people are. There’s likely someone else looking for a friend too, and they may be a bit shy.

This baby elephant is a great example of trying to make new friends. It seems mystified, curious and excited, he but doesn’t hesitate to take that small step (or twenty) to introduce himself. You can do this too! So why not take a moment to forget your worries, step into a new space, open up your arms (and ears) and embrace the chance to make new friends? You’ll be glad you did!
